With three BGVs, the leader can riff and actually lead vocally.

This goes back to not trying to do it all at once. Three-part harmony is enough to create a chord. Assuming one of the parts is doubling the melody, that frees up the main soloist to direct the song, call out where it is going, and actually flow with the spirit and lead the congregation.
